Next Wednesday, April 29th, 2015 Fresno State is proud to host Denim Day, the annual event that encourages individuals to wear jeans on this day, in support of sexual assault survivors, is a long standing tradition on our campus.
Denim Day was started as a form of protest by women in the Italian Parliament, who wore jeans after a 1990’s verdict against a driving instructor was overturned and dismissed. The driver had been charged with rape after he picked up an 18- year old girl for her first driving lesson; he took her to an isolated road, pulled her out of the car, wrestled one leg out of her jeans, and forcibly raped her. The verdict was overturned because the perpetrator argued that the victim wore very, very, tight jeans, meaning she had to help the perpetrator remove them – resulting in consensual sex.
In response to this Denim Day was started, and reached the California Senate and Assembly who also protested by wearing jeans.
Fresno State’s Women’s Resource Center will also be hosting an information table in the Free Speech area where you can leave messages of support for survivors of sexual assault, acknowledging that what a person wears does not equal consent.
You can also join and share the official Facebook event here https://www.facebook.com/
