Preserving Identity Through Sound: Armenians in California from 1900 to 1960
Hagopian will present a lecture entitled “Preserving Identity Through Sound: Armenians in California from 1900 to 1960,” which examines how Armenian immigrants and their descendants safeguarded and reshaped their musical heritage in the diaspora. Drawing from his recently completed Master’s thesis at Fresno State, Hagopian explores the critical role that music played in preserving Armenian identity in California, particularly in the Central Valley, where Armenian communities flourished after the genocide of 1915. His research relies on oral histories, rare private recordings, community archives, and published works to demonstrate how musicians and entrepreneurs kept Armenian song and dance traditions alive while adapting them to their new environment.

Bitterroot (2024) | CineCulture Screening
Bitterroot, by director Vera Brunner-Sung, takes place in western Montana, where recently divorced Lue keeps to a steady and quiet routine: his maintenance job, working at his family’s stand at the local farmers market, fly-fishing on the river and midnight outings for karaoke at the local bar. He lives with his widowed mother, Song, whose efforts to find him another wife are unwelcome and increasingly difficult to avoid. Song worries that she cannot get through to him, seeking guidance from her ancestors. The order that Lue clings to begins to crumble when he is suddenly laid off. He hides the truth from Song and scrambles to find work, but she senses something is wrong. She consults her shaman for help, but Lue only pulls further away. Soon he discovers that the spirit world may still have influence over his life—and he must face the buried pain that destroyed his marriage. 2024 Winner of a Special Jury Mention at the Tribeca Film Festival. Bulldog Hours at the Library
Starting this fall semester, the library will close to the public at 8:00 p.m., Sunday through Thursday. After 8:00 p.m., only Fresno State students, faculty, and staff with a valid Bulldog ID card will be allowed to enter the library. This policy is in place to help enhance safety, reduce distractions, and ensure a secure, peaceful study environment for our Fresno State community.
What’s changing, how it works, and why it matters.
Starting August 20 — the first day of instruction — the Library introduced new “Bulldog Hours” from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., Sunday through Thursday.
During Bulldog Hours, only Fresno State affiliates will be able to access the Library building using their valid Bulldog ID Card via card swipe. The Library doors will allow entry only to students, staff, and faculty with an active ID.
Why this matters: Bulldog Hours are designed to create a safer, more focused, and student-centered study environment during peak academic hours. This initiative aims to foster a stronger sense of community among Fresno State students and improve the late-night study experience.
There will be a grace period until October 1 for those who need to replace or obtain their ID cards.
Read the FAQ at the FS Library News site.
