This Wednesday, October 8th, kicks off the 2014 Sankofa Black Film Festival, sponsored by the Africana Studies Department here at Fresno State. This year’s theme invites students to stand in solidarity with Ferguson. The first film being screened for this festival is, The Great Debaters, A drama based on the true story of African American poet and educator Melvin B. Tolson who led his debate team at Wiley College during the highly segregated 1930’s. The film will be screened in room EE191 at 5:30 p.m., and post film discussion will be lead by Dr. Meta Schettler. This event is free and open to all students. Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the October 15th showing of Boys n the Hood, with discussant Dr. De Anna Reese, and the October 22nd showing for Fruitvale Station, with discussant Dr. T. Hasan Johnson.
