Violin and Viola Festival Faculty Chamber Music Concert
Experience an enchanting evening of chamber music at the Violin and Viola Festival – Faculty Chamber Music Concert at Fresno State. This special performance features the festival’s distinguished faculty showcasing their artistry and expertise in an intimate and dynamic program.
Enjoy a selection of exquisite works for violin, viola, and chamber ensembles, performed by master musicians dedicated to their craft. This concert is a celebration of collaboration and the beauty of string music.
The 2025 Fresno State Violin and Viola Festival will take place from March 21-22, 2025 at the Fresno State School of Music, featuring the world renowned guest artists, violinist Cho-Liang Lin, and violist, Hartmut Rohde. The festival will include master classes by the guest artists, a violin and viola ensemble, and two wonderful concerts on Friday and Saturday evenings.
On Friday, March 21, the guest artists will join the faculty members, Dr. Limor Toren-Immerman, Dr. Thomas Loewenheim, and Dr. Peter Klimo, for an evening of some of the most beautiful chamber music for strings and piano: Dvořák’s Piano Quintet No. 2 in A major Op. 81 and Brahms’ Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34. The concert will take place at the School of Music Concert Hall and will start at 7:30 PM.
On Saturday the guest artist will join the Fresno State Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Thomas Loewenheim, for a performance of Hummel’s Fantasie for Viola and Orchestra, Bruch’s Romanze for viola and orchestra and Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. The concert will also feature the Violin and Viola Festival Ensemble, as well as the world premiere of Eric Zeisl’s ballet Uranium 235 which was written in 1945 but has never been performed before. Zeisl’s music was written just a few months after the release of the Atom bomb and is one of the first pieces ever written which was affected by the events of the time. For this special concert Dr. Lori Clune from the Department of History and Dr. Hanayo Oya, from the department of Media, Communications and Journalism, will present a talk related to the period when Uranium 235 was written. The concerts will take place at the School of Music Concert Hall and will start at 7:30 PM. The pre-concert lecture will take place at 6:45 PM in the band room, adjacent to the concert hall.
Tickets are available online at: www.fresnostate.edu/music or at the door. The Fresno State Violin and Viola Festival is offered to all interested violinists and violists and classes are open to the public.

From Natives to Foreigners: Enduring Erasures of Armenians in Turkey
What does it mean for a people to be transformed from indigenous inhabitants to foreigners in their own homeland? This lecture introduces the concept of “denativization” to examine how Armenians in Turkey underwent this transformation. Denativization extends beyond genocide and human rights violations, addressing the systemic erasure of Armenian presence, identity, and history. Through historical events, policies, and cultural shifts, the lecture illustrates how Armenians, once integral to Anatolia, were systematically marginalized and rendered alien in their ancestral land. Rather than viewing the Armenian genocide as a definitive endpoint, this approach highlights its enduring afterlives—showing how erasure and marginalization persist through erasures and historical denial in the present.
